Laid-off slaughterhouse workers protest in Longueuil

Hundreds of laid-off slaughterhouse workers held a demonstration in Longueuil Tuesday at the headquarters of the Union of Agricultural Producers (UPA.)

The workers travelled from St-Cyrile-de-Wendover by bus early Tuesday morning.

Many told the CBC they are owed thousands of dollars in unpaid wages and vacation pay after the closure of the Levinoff-Colbex abattoir last month, that left 270 workers out of a job.

One worker told the CBC he's owed between $10,000 and $12,000.

The UPA has been running the slaughterhouse since 2005, when it acquired it from a private company. It has reported losing about $100,000 a month operating the facility.
