By definition, trends are fleeting. They're ephemeral. And each day we see our fair share of looks we'd like to remove from our sartorial lexicon. So join us, each week, as we analyze a trend that's had its 15 minutes of fame. These looks are well into their Minute 16, folks. It's time to usher them toward stage left.
The Trend: Okay, so this isn't really a trend. We'll admit that. But as the sun heats up our hemisphere, many people's skin colour changes and winter makeup no longer matches. The problem is, beauty products are expensive -- especially foundation -- so we feel we can slip by with our winter colour for the summer. Alas, this look is no good. It comes off as unnatural, and deters from our beauty instead of polishing our look.
Chief Offenders: We often see celebrities with bad tans (see slideshow below), but what we don't see is mismatched foundation. That's probably because they can afford a) makeup artists and b) high quality products whenever their skin colour changes a shade. This look is most common for the general public as the seasons change. We don't want to buy products before our skin has reached its palest in the winter or darkest in the summer to save some money -- which is completely reasonable.
What's Wrong With It: The mismatched look makes the foundation stand out more than it's supposed to -- foundation is there to make the skin look even and flawless, not like an added layer of skin. And then there's the neck-not-matching-the-face factor, which always is unfortunate.
May We Suggest: Investing in a foundation that either changes to match your skin tone as you apply (technology!) or mix your winter shade with your summer -- this will give you a good in-between colour. Another option for those lucky enough to have naturally clear skin is to opt for a tinted moisturizer that provides light coverage, making caked-on foundation impossible!
