Charge in Surrey, B.C., Christmas homicide

A 22-year-old man has been charged with the 2011 Christmas Day shooting death of a Surrey, B.C., store clerk, police say.

William Whiteside has been charged with the second-degree murder of clerk Alok Gupta.

Police said Friday there could be more arrests in the case.

Gupta, 27, had offered to look after the convenience store, Ken's Grocery, near 117B Street and 96 Avenue, as a favour to the two owners so they could have the day off.

He was shot at about 4 p.m. PT. The motive was believed to be robbery, but police have not confirmed that.

Gupta was from India and was living in B.C. on a student visa.
