Saanich Newscast Goes Big With Potato Chip Thief Story (VIDEO)

WATCH: Potato Chip Bandits Busted

No crime is too small for the Saanich, B.C. police.

That's what two drunk female university students found when they were surrounded by police dogs and officers after stealing two bags of barbecue-flavoured potato chips from a garage, last month. It's an incident that's barely worth reporting but the local CTV station decided that the tale was worth a full three-minute segment.

We're not sure what we like more: the dramatic re-enactment complete with crime-scene 'evidence' or the zingers thrown out by Saanich Police spokesman Sgt. Dean Jantzen.

"Apparently the chips had been accessed. There was some illicit chip tasting," he quipped to a small gathering of reporters.

"These are first-time chip offenders," he said, barely able to contain his laughter.

They would've gotten away with it too. But the "barbecue bandits" were likely nabbed by the yapping of an alert guard dog, in this case, a chihuahua, reports the Victoria Times-Colonist.
