1.6M tickets sold for Olympic football tournaments - more than Euro 2012

LONDON - Olympic organizers have sold 1.6 million tickets for the men's and women's football tournaments — although half a million are still available.

The sales exceed the 1.4 million that were sold at this summer's European Championship, London organizing committee spokeswoman Jackie Brock-Doyle said Wednesday.

Football is one of two sports that kick off the London games early, along with archery.

More tickets have been sold for football than any other sport — largely because of the size of the venues — despite some concerns that the tournaments wouldn't be much of a draw.

Organizers said earlier this week that about 80 per cent of the 37,000 people expected to attend Wednesday's doubleheader between U.S.-France and Colombia-North Korea in Glasgow had been handed freebies.
