London Olympic Opening Ceremony Draws In Average Of 6.4 Million Canadians: CTV

TORONTO - The opening ceremony of the London Olympics was watched by an average of 6.4 million Canadians, Canada's Olympic broadcasters reported Saturday.

The broadcasters say 16.6 million viewers turned into some part of the 3.5-hour event, which was shown on Canada's Olympic broadcast media consortium, which includes CTV, RDS, Sportsnet, TSN and V.

An average of 13.5 million tuned into the opening ceremony of the 2010 Vancouver Games.

The consortium reported that the ratings for the London opening ceremony are a Canadian record for a summer Olympics. However this is the first to be held since a new ratings measurement system was introduced in 2009 that has seen sports TV ratings skyrocket.

The previous high under the old ratings system was the opening ceremony of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, which averaged 4.3 million viewers on CBC.
