LONDON - Top-ranked Niccolo Campriani of Italy begins his quest for three Olympic medals Monday in the 10-meter air rifle at the Royal Artillery Barracks.
Campriani qualified for all three rifle disciplines, just as he did for Beijing, where he placed no better than 12th in air rifle.
This time, he returns as the world champion in air rifle and a worlds finalist in 50-meter 3 Positions. He's won World Cups in all three disciplines, including 50 prone, in the last two years.
Zhu Qinan will have been inspired by the victories on the weekend of Chinese countrywomen Yi Siling and Guo Wenjun. Zhu won in Athens and was runner-up in Beijing by just eight-tenths of a point to Abhinav Bindra, who became India's first individual Olympic gold medallist .
Bindra was also back, after coming out of an 18-month retirement to compete in London.
Also in contention was Illia Charheika of Belarus, who has medaled twice in World Cups this year.
It will be the only shooting gold medal awarded for the day. Men's skeet qualifying also begins.
