SIU identifies woman killed in funeral procession crash

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit has released the name of the woman who was struck and killed by a police cruiser that was leading a funeral procession.

The civilian police watchdog says that Satyawatti (Janet) Katryan, 64, died Saturday afternoon, when she was struck near the Woodbine Shopping Centre, at Rexdale Boulevard and Highway 27.

The SIU says that Katryan was pronounced dead at the scene. The collision remains under investigation.

Some people in the procession were kept from the funeral because their cars were being held by the SIU.

Carlton Brown was among the mourners who were part of the procession that was making its way to the cemetery when the crash occurred.

"This is a tragedy as well, but it still doesn’t relieve the pain of not being where you're supposed to be," Brown told CBC News on Saturday.

The SIU investigates all incidents involving police that result in death, serious injuries or in which allegations of sexual assault are raised.
