Portugal cancels windsurfer's Olympic credential after she fails to show

WEYMOUTH, England - The press officer for Portugal's sailing team says windsurfer Carolina Borges-Mendelblatt has had her Olympic accreditation cancelled after she failed to show up for the opening competition.

Spokesman Rui Costa says Borges emailed a Portuguese Olympic official saying she couldn't compete in Tuesday's opening races due to illness and personal matters. Costa says that after medical personnel weren't able to contact her to confirm her story, her accreditation was cancelled.

She is married to American sailor Mark Mendelblatt, who's competing in the Star class.
