Canada's Coulombe-Fortier falls in taekwondo quarters

Canada's Francois Coulombe-Fortier dropped his quarter-final match in the Olympic taekwondo tournament on Saturday in London to Daba Modibo Keita of Mali, 11-6 on points.

Keita did not advance to the final in the over-80 kilogram division, meaning the Quebec City native will not fight for a bronze medal through repechage.

Keita took an early 4-1 lead into the second round but a second round head kick brought the Canadian back within one point heading into the final round, trailing 6-5.

Coulombe-Fortier won his opening match against Gadzhi Umarov of Russia, 7-3, using an early lead to his advantage against his Russian opponent in the preliminaries. Offensive kicks worth two and three points in the first two rounds helped the Canadian to a 5-0 advantage into the final round.
