News of punk band Pussy Riot's guilty verdict today on charges of hooliganism and subsequent sentencing of two years in prison in Russia has sparked international outrage from a variety of people, including musicians.
Perhaps not coincidentally, some were also incensed with news that Russian Gay Pride parades in Moscow were reportedly being banned for the next 100 years.
Also certainly not coincidentally, Pussy Riot have just today released a new single via the Guardian newspaper called "Putin Lights Up The Fires."
Here are some of the reactions from some notable musicians on hearing the news the three women were found guilty.
"Shocking." Tegan and Sara tweeted before linking to video of the trial.
"Holy f---in s--t. This is f---ed up #Pussyriot" Kate Nash started in a string of tweets. "Just because the 'excitement' of the trial is over doesn't mean we stop fighting. Speaking to other members of the music community today...Figuring out next steps. We have to continue to protest how the Russian government treats it's people"
"It's a sad day because I actually love Russia! What's happening to this great nation that it's afraid of poofs, Madonna and pussy!" Boy George tweeted.
"Oh. I'm afraid #moscow has just opened a can of worms. #pussyriot and now banning #gaypride," k.d. lang tweeted. "Time to take action my friends. For Humanity"
"Pussy Riot found guilty in Russia. Absolutely crazy," Gallows tweeted.
"2 years harsh sentence for Pussy Riot. Disproportionate for such a prank. #pussyriot," former Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic said via Twitter.
"@pmharper you must be jealous of putin this morning," Stars singer Torquil Campbell tweeted referring to socially conservative Canadian Prime Minster Stephen Harper. "All those muscles and the ability to imprison artists..he's got it all...."
"My heart is heavy. Inspired by these incredible women. In a tv station," JD Samson said in a string of tweets. "Crying on the way. These are tears of revolution. They are somehow salty but born out of the human body. We need to hug."
"Pussy Riot are obviously the tip of the iceberg, and they're good at grabbing attention," music journalist Tom Breihan tweeted. "But. A punk band is going to a prison camp...They're being sent there for acting like a punk band. If you can't understand why that resonates so hard, please stay off Twitter today."
