Lily Collins TIFF 2012: Get The Actress' Red Carpet Beauty Look

Get Lily Collins' Red Carpet Look

Actress Lily Collins walked the TIFF 2012 red carpet for the movie Writers, which also stars Patrick Schwarzenegger. She wore a colourful Balmain Spring 2013 dress and makeup so simple, she wasn't even wearing eye shadow.

"We didn't want her makeup to compete with her dress," said celebrity makeup artist (and Canadian) Beau Nelson, who somehow managed to squeeze a phone interview into a busy schedule that included New York Fashion Week, Christina Hendricks at TIFF, and a 5 am call time today with Nicole Richie in NYC.

On skin: Working with Victoria's Secret makeup, Beau prepped Lily's complexion with VS Pro Airbrush FX Perfecting Primer, a light touch of Tinted Moisturizer, and a little concealer from the VS Pro Camouflage FX Universal Concealer Palette.

On cheeks: On the actress's cheeks, Beau used Color Drama Lipstick in Heartbeat, a peachy pink. He dabbed the colour on the pad of his ring finger, rubbed it against the ring finger of his opposite hand, then used both fingertips in unison to tap the colour onto Lily's cheeks. He blended Radiance FX Face Illuminator on her cheekbones to highlight, then set her t-zone with Mineral Pressed Face Powder in Light 10.

On eyes: Beau kept Lily's eye makeup super simple. He brushed her brows, but left them makeup-free. He curled Lily's lashes, defined them with Voluptuous Volume Mascara and added some individual lash flares. To brighten the entire eye area, he sculpted the inner corners with a shimmery highlight; try VS Pro Light FX HD Eye Brightening Pen. "I used a little concealer on her lids, but there was no need for shadow," he said. (Beau didn't use eyeliner either, but he told me Lily had a bit of gel liner left between her lashes after washing off the makeup she'd worn earlier in the day. If you're copying this look, you may want to push a bit of liner between your lashes to kick up the definition.)

On lips: To finish the makeup, Beau added a discreet highlight to Lily's cupid's bow (the Light FX HD Eye Brightening Pen is genius for that, too), and patted Color Drama Lipstick in Heartbeat onto her lips with a fingertip. He added another layer of colour by dabbing it straight from the tube, then dabbed the edges again with a fingertip for a soft, stain-like finish.

The simplicity of this makeup really works on Lily thanks to her wonderful, naturally lush brows, which Beau describes as "exclamation marks on her face." If you're not so well endowed, the focus will simply shift slightly. "On Lily, the look is about the whole eye area," notes Beau. "But if you have less brow, the look can be all about your lashes instead."
