Ottawa officer's killer guilty of sexually assaulting girl

A former Saskatchewan Mountie already serving life in prison for murder has been found guilty of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl and sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Kevin Gregson, 45, was found guilty of first-degree murder in March in the stabbing death of Ottawa police Const. Eric Czapnik.

Gregson was also found guilty Wednesday morning of sexual assault. The Crown asked for 10 years behind bars and the judge agreed.

A girl, now 13, testified she was raped four times over a couple of days. She could not deliver her victim impact statement because she was overcome with tears. Her friend read the statement to the court.

Just one week after those assaults, Gregson murdered Czapnik, who was sitting in his patrol car outside The Ottawa Hospital's Civic campus emergency room.

Early in the morning of Dec. 29, 2009, Gregson attacked the officer with a knife. He is already serving an automatic penalty of life in prison with essentially no chance of parole for 25 years.
