Huffington Post Canada and AOL Canada have snagged eight nominations for the Canadian Online Publishing Awards.

Announced on Thursday, the nominations recognize original reporting and blogs from across The Huffington Post Media Group and AOL Canada.

The Huffington Post Canada and HuffPost Politics were nominated for best news coverage in the Daily and Weekly Newspapers and Broadcasters division, which includes such media organizations as The Toronto Star, CBC and The Globe and Mail.

A blog by NDP MP Charlie Angus, titled “What if They Declared and Emergency and No One Came?,” which sparked public outcry over the humanitarian crisis in Attawapiskat and exploded on social media with more than 23,000 Facebook shares, picked up nominations for Best Blog and Best Online-Only Article or Series of Articles.

“Mind The Gap,” a series by HuffPost Business exploring the causes and implications of growing income inequality in Canada, and a blog by Douglas Anthony Cooper, called “PETA’s Death Cult” were also nominated for best article or series.

Regular blogger JJ. McCullough also earned a nod in the Best Blog category for his "Media Bites” blog.

"The nominations for our blogs, enterprise journalism and news coverage overall speaks to the commitment that we have to bring great stories to Canadians," said Kenny Yum, managing editor of HuffPost Canada.

"Our Mind the Gap series and our approach to covering the NDP leadership convention, where we were embedded at the convention, shows that there is a lot of room for non-traditional media in our landscape," he said.

Music site Spinner Canada received its second consecutive COPA nomination, with a nod for Best Blog in the Consumer, custom, religious, public association division.

"Spinner's work has been well known within the music community and we're happy to see the COPAs recognize its work," said Yum.

The winners will be announced a reception in Toronto on October 22.
