Safeway, Walmart Beef Recall Caused By E. Coli Fears, Contamination At Alberta Plant

E. coli fears have prompted a beef recall from stores in 30 states in the U.S., including Walmart and Safeway.

Along with Walmart and Safeway, the retail chains involved in the XL Foods recall in the U.S. include Kroger, Jay C, FoodsCo., Food4Less, Albertson's and Sam's Club.

Alberta plant XL Foods is voluntarily calling the recall over concerns of a potential E. coli contamination

The U.S. banned exports from the XL Foods plant this week after E. coli was found in shipments.

The beef recall has been expanded over seven times this month and affected beef sold in major retailers in the U.S. and Canada, including Walmart, Safeway, Sobeys and IGA.

Four cases of E. coli have also been reported in Edmonton, caused by steaks bought from retail giant Costco.

The steaks came from a XL Foods processing plant near Brooks in southern Alberta, but health officials aren't sure if the E. coli came from the product or from a tenderizing machine used at the Costco store.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency recommends consumers who aren't sure if they have affected product check with the stores that they purchased beef from or throw it out.
