Japan's Yoshida wins women's wrestling worlds for 11th straight international title

SHERWOOD PARK, Alta. - Japan's Saori Yoshida ran her string of international championship wins to 13 by taking out the women's wrestling world championships on Friday, pinning American Helen Maroulis in the second round in the 55-kilogram title match.

It was her tenth title in the worlds, adding to her three Olympic golds, surpassing the record of 12 straight international championship titles she shared with former Russian Greco-Roman wrestler Alexander Karelin.

"I am very happy that I could surpass the record," the 29-year-old Yoshida said through an interpreter. "I'm very, very pleased. It is difficult to express. I'm very happy. I started wrestling at 3 years old, but it definitely feels worthwhile to have spent my life doing (this). It is very rewarding."
