Hey Vancouver, how does it feel to be so popular?

A study by the Reputation Institute has handed the West Coast city the world's best reputation after polling 18,000 people in G8 countries.

"While the idea of a destination’s reputation may not be on the top of everyone’s mind when they decide where to live, work, vacation, or do business, our studies indicate that it should," Nicolas Georges Trad, the Reputation Institute's executive partner, said in a news release.

The institute looked at criteria including the degree to which people "trust, admire, respect and have an affinity" for cities in the survey. It also looked at whether a city had an advanced economy, appealing environment and effective administration.

These criteria are narrowed even further by looking at factors such as its beauty, safety, cultural vibrancy and its business environment.

And while Vancouver wasn't chosen as the prettiest city in the world, only it and Sydney finished in the top 10 in all of these criteria, a news release said.

Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson was understandably elated at the news, saying in a statement that it was a good ego boost for the city, Global BC reported.

"We’re blessed with a beautiful city that our citizens are committed to taking good care of, and it’s inspiring to see that the rest of the world believes in Vancouver just as strongly as we do," he said.

Vienna, Sydney, Copenhagen and Oslo rounded out the top five, while Toronto came in with 22nd best reputation and Montreal followed at 26th.

The news comes as Vancouver's reputation drops in other rankings of global cities. The city ranked third in the Economist's 2012 survey, behind Melbourne and Vienna.
