The newest addition to the Calgary Zoo is a two-year old giraffe, the zoo announced today. Crosby a male Masai giraffe from the Louisville Zoo has made the Savannah building his home.
"He will be introduced to Carrie our 19-year-old female reticulated giraffe, following a month long quarantine in the back of the giraffe area in the Savannah building," said the Calgary Zoo in a statement, adding that Crosby will soon be her new companion.
There are fewer than 150 Masai giraffe in captivity in the world and it is a subspecies that needs bolstering within the captive population, which is why the zoo chose to bring Crosby over.
Participating in the giraffe Species Survival Plan (SSP) for many years now, 17 giraffes have been born at the the Calgary Zoo over the years.
"The SSP is a cooperatively managed captive population program with the goal to retain 90 per cent genetic diversity for at least 100 years of 10 generations," the Zoo said.
Crosby is the second animal to call the zoo home in recent times, with a six year old river hippo nick-named Ghost being the previous addition.
