Fire crews battled a massive fire in near the Langley-Surrey border that closed the southbound lanes of the Golden Ears Bridge.
An explosion of "unknown chemicals" around 2:30 pm Tuesday triggered a chain of smaller explosions, said RCMP Cpl. Holly Marks. Crews from Langley and Surrey fought the flames.
The industrial accident is believed to have started at a company called Ken Johnson Trucking Ltd. on 196th Avenue, reported The Vancouver Sun. Businesses in the industrial area were evacuated.
A worker in a nearby building reported the initial explosion nearly "knocked me out of my chair." A series of smaller blasts followed.
One person was hurt but is not believed to have any life-threatening injuries, Marks said.
Heavy thick smoke covered the area. Southbound lanes of the Golden Ears were closed to all traffic, and buses were rerouted.
The bridge was reopened and power restored to the area on Tuesday night. Power was knocked out after several hydro transformers were blown.
The trucking company has been in operation since 1991 and provides bulk fluid transportation, according to the company's website. "Chemicals, lubricating oils, asphalt, dust palliatives, and special waste," are listed as commodities the company transports.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
