When asked by NDP MP Alexandrine Latendresse about the Toronto-area dinner party event and heavy drinking that allegedly took place — and the potential national security risk — the Parliamentary Secretary for Public Safety Candice Bergen said the matter is being investigated.
"Canadians expect law enforcement officers to act with integrity at all times," Bergen said during question period Friday.
"CBSA is looking into the facts of this situation. Anyone found to have behaved inappropriately, or acting inappropriately, will face sanctions and discipline."
The CBSA's regional director general for the Greater Toronto Area, Goran Vragovic, confirmed in a statement Friday that agency officials did hold meetings with a Chinese delegation and attended a dinner with the group on Aug. 3.
He said that officials had not been aware of any issues surrounding the event, but the agency is taking the allegations very seriously.
"I have requested the assistance of the CBSA professional standards investigations team in order to be completely transparent on what transpired that evening," Vragovic said in the statement.
On Thursday, the Toronto Sun reported that a complaint about the party in Mississauga, Ont. was filed to the Public Sector Integrity Commissioner.
