UPDATE: The B.C. Coroner's Office has identified the man as Stanley Robert Morrison, 51, from Vancouver.

B.C's police watchdog has been called in to investigate the death of a man on Sunday while in custody of Vancouver police.

Police responded to an incident involving an intoxicated 51-year-old man causing a disturbance in a residential neighbourhood at West 7th Avenue and Laurel Street.

The man was taken by police to detox but was escorted home after officers learned the man was "barred" from the centre, said Sgt. Randy Fincham in a news release.

Upon arrival at the home address, the man became unconscious. An ambulance was called and the man was transported to hospital where he later died.

The province's newly formed independent police watchdog has been brought in to investigate, the first time it has been called to do so in the Lower Mainland.

The Independent Investigations Office was set up in September to review incidents of police-involved deaths or serious injuries.
