WHITBY, Ont. - Durham police say a standoff in Whitby, Ont., is related to an abduction in nearby Clarington.

Investigators say they are negotiating with a man who has barricaded himself in an auto repair business (on Hopkins Street) and do not believe anyone else is inside.

Police say the man is wanted in connection with a kidnapping incident on Monday night.

Oshawa Mayor John Henry says city solicitor David Potts was abducted from his home following a council meeting, managed to escape, and is now safe at home.

There has been no indication of who might be responsible for Potts' abduction.

Henry says all he knows is that there was an issue when Potts arrived home.

"His wife was worried enough to call the police and the police called me," Henry said. "Police found that Mr. Potts had been taken against his will."
