Canada's Valerie Maltais sets world record in 1,000 at short-track World Cup

CALGARY - Canada's Valerie Maltais broke the world short-track speedskating record in the 1,000 metres on Friday, winning her qualification heat at the ISU World Cup in 1 minute, 27.653 seconds.

The Quebec skater broke the mark of 1:29.049 set by China's Zhou Yang in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

"I knew that I was able to get a world record because I did it during the Canadian Fall World Cup selections in Calgary (in September)," Maltais said. "When started my race I just told my coach I was going to go fast during the race, but I didn't say I was trying to break the record."
