Det. Sgt. Gary Giroux told reporters that the victim was followed and attacked as she emerged from a laneway connecting Bleecker Street to Ontario Street.
"She was attacked from behind by a lone male individual with a knife," Giroux said Tuesday, just hours after the victim died.
The victim, who police say was in her 50s, was taken to St. Michael’s Hospital, where she later died of her injuries. Police say she was stabbed multiple times.
Giroux said investigators are still trying to learn more about the victim, but it appears that she may have been heading home from work at the time of the attack that ended her life.
Investigators are now reviewing video from nearby apartment buildings and speaking to witnesses, including individuals that came to the aid of the fatally wounded woman.
Giroux said it is believed the suspect is a white male, who is approximately five feet 10 inches tall was wearing dark clothing and a cap of some sort at the time of the attack.
There is a "strong possibility" that the suspect may have blood on his clothing and may tell others about his involvement in the crime, Giroux said.
Early Tuesday evening, police posted video online of the suspect following the woman.
Neighbours say they heard a woman screaming shortly before 7 a.m. There are reports a resident intervened in the attack in an attempt to save the woman.
