Searchers have found a B.C. woman and her 20-month-old daughter who got lost in the woods near Powell River yesterday while mushroom picking.

Heather Thompson, 31, and her daughter Erika set out around 10 a.m. PT Wednesday. Her boyfriend reported the pair missing at 5 p.m. when they failed to return.

Her van was found about 14 kilometres away in the Duck Lake area on Wednesday night with her purse and cell phone inside, but searchers were unable to locate Thompson or her child.

Searchers looked for the pair until 3 a.m. PT Thursday, and resumed searching again at 7 a.m. Thursday with the support of the RCMP Air Services from Vancouver.

Const. Bakker said police were particularly concerned because the temperature dipped to one degree Celsius overnight in some areas.

Thompson and her daughter were finally spotted by searchers about one kilometre away from her van around 11:30 a.m. when they heard her yelling. They were cold and tired, but both were safe.

They were airlifted from the area by RCMP helicopter.
