Hurricane Sandy has yet to make landfall in the U.S., but already residents in the Toronto area are losing power.

Pockets of the downtown, as well as Etobicoke, Scarborough, North York and East York are already in the dark as Sandy's reach approaches Southern Ontario.

Toronto Hydro tweeted that there are also reports of downed power lines. See a map of the current outages on their website.

"The combination of saturated ground, residual leaves on trees, and strong winds will likely lead to fallen limbs and downed trees resulting in power outages across the city," said Toronto Hydro in a release.

They are warning residents to keep their distance from downed poles and power lines. Staffing has been increased as Sandy rolls through the city.

Although the U.S.'s Eastern Seaboard will be bearing the brunt of Sandy's power, Toronto will be lashed by the ‘Frankenstorm's’ fierce winds and heavy rain. Starting late Monday evening into Tuesday morning, Environment Canada says the GTA can expect 35 millimeters of rain and gusts up to 100 km/h.

The city is encouraging residents to prepare for the "megastorm" by clearing leaves from gutters, taking down Halloween decorations and keeping an emergency kit with water and food.

Hundreds of flights in and out of Toronto airports were delayed or cancelled today, with further cancellations anticipated.
