Denny Morrison, Christine Nesbitt win events at Fall World Cup Long Track Trials

CALGARY - Defending world champion Denny Morrison won the men's 1,500-metre race at the Fall World Cup Long Track Trials on Thursday.

Christine Nesbitt, the women's 1,000 and 1,500 world champ, took first place in the 3,000 event.

Morrison, from Fort St. John, B.C., finished first in one minute 44.73 seconds. Regina's Lucas Makowsky was second in 1:46.43, while Mathieu Giroux of Pointe-aux-Trembles, Que., was in third 1:46.47.

Nesbitt, from London, Ont., won the 3,000 in 4:08.60. Ottawa's Ivanie Blondin was second in 4:10.38 ahead of Winnipeg's Cindy Klassen (4:11.42).

The trials continue through Sunday.
