The RCMP confirm that the human remains found in Cochrane belong to a Caucasian male between the ages of 18 and 30 years.
The cause of death is unknown and RCMP believe that the remains were there less than a year.
"The medical examiner has reported that the deceased had sustained an old injury, a broken nose that had healed,"a release said.
Children playing outside their home near Highway 22 south of Cochrane, a rural area northwest of Calgary, made the grisly discovery in October this year.
Police say the remains were in an advanced state of decomposition.
Investigators closed down a road in the area as they searched for other evidence.
The investigation is being treated as suspicious until proven otherwise.
