CALGARY, CAN. - What started as a shoplifting incident at a Calgary shopping mall escalated into something far more dangerous when a female employee decided to take matters into her own hands.
Calgary police say that late Sunday afternoon, they were called to a department store at Sunridge Mall for a report of shoplifting.
As a suspect attempted to flee the store, a female employee gave chase and ended up in a vehicle with the man, who was brandishing a knife.
Police say that as the pair struggled in the car, the woman was able to disarm the suspect.
However, he then sped out of the parking lot with her still inside and headed down a street the wrong way, ramming two occupied vehicles before officers were able to stop him.
The female employee was shaken, but not physically harmed during the incident.
Darryl Stephen Hannaford, 32, has been charged with robbery, kidnapping, assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm and other charges.
