Legion Says Poppy Sales Cut Back By B.C. Costco

The Royal Canadian Legion in Abbotsford, B.C. says it’s feeling the pinch this year when it comes to selling poppies at the local Costco.

Branch 15 President Doug Matthews says the popular shopping destination cut their access to the store over the annual two-week fund raising campaign.

“This year, they have cut us down to Friday and Saturday only,” said Matthews. “They cut us down to five days from 16 and that makes a big difference in our donations."

Matthews says they make $700 to $1,000 a day at the Costco location, so the reduced access could cut $10,000 from their collections, money that would go to help veterans throughout the year.

Costco Canada says there has been no reduction in access at their locations to poppy sellers, which has been the same for several years.

Matthews said legion members hope other stores will help cover the shortfall.

"We have obtained one new source this year. Canadian Tire has let us in. We never applied there before but we did this year and they acknowledged it."
