Surrey crash kills 1, splits car in half

One person is dead and another in hospital after a stolen car crashed in Surrey, B.C., Saturday night and split in half.

Surrey RCMP officer Dan Splinter says the crash happened just before 10:30 p.m. PT at the intersection of 128th Street and 68th Avenue.

"Independent witnesses have said that a vehicle was going through on a green light and came into a collision with another vehicle that apparently disobeyed a red light," he said.

"One vehicle came into contact with a light standard and broke into two pieces ... so there was quite a bit of speed involved.” Splinter says it’s not clear if the occupants of the vehicle that split in half were wearing seatbelts.

"Both of the occupants of the vehicle that broke in two were ejected,” he said.

Splinter said the car was reported stolen from Surrey early Sunday morning.

The occupants of the other car suffered minor injuries.
