Justin Bieber, Carly Rae Jepsen take home MTV Europe Awards

Canadian stars Justin Bieber and Carly Rae Jepsen made a big showing at the MTV Europe Awards Sunday evening, with Bieber taking home three prizes and Jepsen two.

Stratford, Ont., teen sensation Bieber won the awards for best male singer, best pop star and best world stage – a prize that cited his appearances at Madrid and Belfast award shows.

Bieber, 18, has more than 20 million followers on Twitter and is breaking out of his teen pop mold with Believe, his latest album released in June.

He was matched in his medal haul only by Taylor Swift, the 22-year-old country singer who won best look, best live performance and best female.

Jepsen, the Mission, B.C. singer who became known internationally with the release of Call Me Maybe, won best song for her catchy hit.

She also took the MTV Europe prize for “best push,” an award that names her as a star to watch. Jepsen was a popular performer at the televised broadcast from Frankfurt, Germany.

However, she couldn’t top the impact of Psy, who treated the audience to his hit Gangnam Style, becoming the first South Korean to perform at the annual awards. Gangnam Style was named best video.
