18-year-old dies in fatal crash in St-Hyacinthe

An 18-year-old woman is dead after losing control of the vehicle she was driving on Thursday night in Saint-Hyacinthe, in the Montérégie region, 55 kilometres east of Montreal.

Quebec provincial police said the woman was driving along the Yamaska river on Saint-Pierre Street West when she struck a culvert. The car ended up in the ditch, and emergency crews had to use the jaws of life to extract her from the vehicle.

The woman was rushed to hospital in critical condition, where she died overnight.

La Sûreté du Québec said the cause of the accident is still under investigation, although it appears speed could have played a factor.

The young woman's identity has not yet been released, pending notification of her relatives.
