Labrador politician suspended from coaching hockey after making comments to ref

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - A Newfoundland politician who is also a hockey coach has been handed a six-game suspension for comments he made towards a referee during a game in Labrador City.

Keith Russell is the Progressive Conservative member of the legislature for the Labrador district of Lake Melville.

Premier Kathy Dunderdale says Russell's actions were inappropriate and unacceptable.

It's not the first time Russell has been chastised for unbecoming comments.

In September, he apologized for belittling the spiritual claims of native protesters opposed to the proposed Muskrat Falls hydroelectric project..

In an earlier media interview, Russell dismissed the claims as "mumbo jumbo."
