Canadian Western Bank Robbery: Police Fire Shots After Armed Holdup In Edmonton

EDMONTON - Police responding to an armed robbery at a bank in southeast Edmonton were involved in a shooting, reportedly of the suspect.

According to Edmonton police, officers were called to Canadian Western Bank at 21 Avenue and 99 Street in South Edmonton Common just before 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

"An officer-involved shooting occurred during this event so ASIRT (the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team) will be taking over the file immediately," the Edmonton Police Service said in a statement to media.

The Globe and Mail has reported that police shot the robbery suspect and the suspect has been taken to hospital. No one else was injured.

Eye witnesses told the Edmonton Journal that nine police cruisers and an ambulance showed up around 2 p.m. and some of the officers had guns out, standing behind their cars.

UPDATE: 4:15 p.m. -- Edmonton police say the bank robbery suspect has life-threatening injuries, iNews880 reports.
