Edmonton police open fire, wound suspect in bank robbery

EDMONTON - Edmonton police have shot and wounded an armed man after being called to a bank robbery at a south-side shopping complex.

The robbery took place Tuesday afternoon at the Canadian Western Bank at South Edmonton Common.

Deputy Chief Brian Simpson says officers were at the scene within minutes of getting the call.

He says shots were allegedly fired and a suspect sustained life-threatening injuries.

No customers or staff at the bank were injured.

As is protocol in any shooting involving a police officer, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has launched an investigation.
