Theft of $25,000 in transit passes leads to charges

A Burnaby man has been charged with allegedly stealing more than $25,000 dollars in TransLink monthly fare passes from grocery stores and pharmacies around Metro Vancouver.

Transit Police allege George Edward McFadyen, 44, targeted seven businesses in Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster, and Surrey in recent months.

Police said he would distract the employees, then reach over the counter to grab the passes before running out of the store.

McFadyen was released on the conditions that he will not enter Safeway or Shopper's Drug Mart stores or possess more than one transit fare pass.

He is scheduled to appear in court again on Feb. 6 to face a charge of theft over $5,000.
