Sailors return to Esquimalt after 6 months at sea

Two-hundred Canadian sailors have come home for the holidays, after more than six months patrolling off the coast of Costa Rica.

The crew of the HMCS Ottawa returned to Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt on Friday with at least one exciting high seas tale to tell.

Commodore Scott Bishop said earlier this month the patrol frigate found, tracked and helped U.S. Coast Guard law enforcement officers board a suspicious fishing boat where they found over a thousand kilograms of cocaine.

Bishop also said the sailors are really looking forward to stretching their sea legs.

It's "a considerable amount of time to be away from your family, especially at this time of year when the family is getting ready for Christmas," he told CBC News.

"Lots of Christmas shopping and getting the home ready for the visit of relatives. People are really keen to get home and spend some time with their families."
