After playing shows on five previous New Year's Eves, Elliott Brood singer Casey Laforet let someone else in the family take center stage on Monday night as his son became the first baby born in Toronto this year.

The Toronto Star reports Wynn Christopher Laforet was born at St. Michael's Hospital at exactly midnight.

"They told me it was going to take longer," mother Jane Muggs told the paper. "It just sped up really fast."

"This literally happened as the ball dropped," Laforet, 36, said. "He came out as the champagne got popped."

Laforet -- who said no video could prepare him for the experience -- later signed an autograph for the doctor who delivered Wynn.

The 7-pound, 4-ounce baby was named after the couple was looking through a book entitled Rock 'n' Roll Baby Names.

"He knows how to make an entrance," Laforet said, adding he'll put a small guitar in his hands as soon as he can. "We want him to be creative. And successful at whatever he chooses to do."

The band's Twitter account had several people offering Laforet and Muggs congratulations which were retweeted. The band will play two dates at Toronto's Dakota Tavern later this month before starting a European tour in February. The band released its last studio album Days Into Years in 2011.
