N.L. man arguing in court that patients shouldn't face parking bills

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - A Newfoundland and Labrador man is expected in court today to make his case for why hospitals shouldn't be charging him for parking.

Tom Badcock is challenging Eastern Health over parking tickets, arguing that forcing patients to pay for parking is against the Canada Health Act.

Badcock's statement of claim asks Eastern Health to review its parking policies at all health care facilities under their jurisdiction and establish a system that will waive his parking fees.

The lawyer representing Eastern Health, John Hogan, filed court documents on Nov. 28 which say that Eastern Health denies that it breached the federal legislation.

Eastern Health says there is no basis for Badcock's statement of claim and has put forth an application to have the claim struck down.
