As the search for missing Langdon Hall chef Jonathan Gushue continues, a former colleague wondered whether his high-pressure job was a factor in his disappearance.
Shane Harper, executive pastry chef of the McEwan Group who had previously worked with Gushue, commented on the need to retreat from the demands of the culinary industry.
“It’s the stress of the job. I’m surprised he’s gone. We didn’t expect this. But sometimes everyone succumbs, everyone needs a break,” he told the Toronto Star.
The 41-year-old chef at the upscale resort in Cambridge, Ont., has been missing for over a week. On Dec. 29, he worked his shift, then travelled to Toronto for dinner with a colleague, and stayed at the Park Hyatt on Avenue Road, according to the Globe and Mail. Gushue reportedly phoned his family that evening, the National Post said. He checked out on Dec. 31, leaving his cellphone behind, and did not show up at Langdon Hall for New Year's Eve dinner service.
Police continue to investigate leads, and do not believe Gushue is in danger or suspect foul play.
He previously went missing a few years ago for three or four days, but his continued absence raises concerns.
The father of three previously worked at Truffles Restaurant at the Four Seasons Toronto, as well as other establishments around the world, according to his Langdon Hall bio.
Adrian Brijbassi, managing editor of Vacay.ca, fondly recalls the fun and professional atmosphere at Langdon Hall, noting Gushue's excitement for the job.
"Passion drives you, and few chefs I have ever met are as passionate about food as Langdon Hall's leader," he wrote on The Huffington Post Canada.
Mitchell Davis, executive vice-president of the James Beard Foundation who was acquainted with Gushue, described him as dependable to the National Post.
“Usually the word is out on the street that [a chef is] a screamer or whatever, but I’ve never heard anyone say anything like that about Jonathan,” he said.
Police described Gushue as white, around five feet 10 inches tall in height, and 180 pounds. He has blue eyes and short, dark hair. He may also be using the name Jonathan Herder, his middle name, police said.
