Albertans pick 5 items for 2112 time capsule; more to be determined

EDMONTON - Letters from schoolchildren predicting life in 100 years and a full, uncirculated 2012 coin set are just two of the items that will be placed in Alberta's time capsule.

The Alberta government says nearly 6,000 people voted on their five favourites from a list of 20 items to be included in the time capsule to be opened in 2112, the 200th anniversary of the Alberta legislature building.

The other three are newspapers from the legislature’s centennial celebrations in September 2012; photos of the 1909 time capsule unearthing event in June 2012; and photos of classes that participated in the School at the Legislature program in 2012.

The public was also asked to share original ideas for items.

Some of those include seeds from Alberta’s native trees; the precious stone ammolite; a piece of grain elevator; a jar of honey; and a personal digital appliance such as an iPhone or iPad.

Gene Zwozdesky, the Speaker of the legislative assembly, will release the complete list of contents for the time capsule later this year.
