UPDATE: 12:37 p.m. -- The Calgary Sun has confirmed that 19-year-old Mitch Harkes and a 17-year-old girl have been charged with second-degree murder in the stabbing death of Brett Wiese.

A Calgary man was killed at a house party on Saturday night after being stabbed while trying to stop party-crashers from entering the home.

The family of Brett Wiese, a 21-year-old University of Calgary business student, says Wiese was in "the wrong place at the wrong time."

According to police, two people were rushed to hospital after a call to a home in the 5100 block of Brisebois Drive N.W. around 3 a.m. Saturday morning.

Brett died of his injuries and the other victim remains in hospital in serious condition.

The Calgary Sun spoke to Brett's uncle, Kip Wiese, who said Brett had no criminal history and was just an unlucky victim of a senseless crime.

"(Brett) was a pretty model kid who just happened to get into an altercation," Kip said.

"He was kind of drawn into it, I suppose."

Kip told the Calgary Herald that a group of young people had been kicked out the the Brentwood party early Saturday evening and returned later that night.

"They came back .... with two vehicles, and four people entered the house," he said. "At least two had knives, unbeknownst to the occupants of the house.

Kip says Brett was stabbed a second time by another person while trying to get the group to leave the party.

Kip told the Sun police have taken two people in for questioning in connection with the stabbing -- a 19-year-old man and a 17-year-old girl.

Brett, a third year commerce student at the Haskayne School of Business, will forever be remembered as "a very kind and gentle soul, all through the years," his mother, Brenda Wiese, told CTV Calgary.
