Red Deer Carjacking Suspect, Duane Luz, Facing Charges After Crime Spree

CALGARY-- A man from Red Deer, Alta., is facing a number of serious charges after a string of incidents including the carjacking of a mother who had just picked up her child from daycare.

It all started Tuesday afternoon when RCMP were called to a grocery store for a shoplifting complaint.

Staff were holding two men in custody but one of them pulled a hunting knife and threatened three employees before fleeing.

Police soon received another 911 call, after a man matching the suspect's description flagged down a vehicle, pulled a knife and tried unsuccessfully to get in on the driver's side.

The same suspect is believed to have then brandished a knife at a woman who was loading her child into her car, telling her she had 30 seconds to get the child out, which she did.

The man then drove off in the vehicle, but police were able to track it using the woman's cell phone.

After the suspect rammed two police vehicles, he was finally taken into custody.

Duane Luz, 42, now faces a number of charges including assault with a weapon, dangerous driving and robbery. He is set to appear in court on Thursday.
