Maple Ridge RCMP Shoot At Stolen Van Suspect

RCMP Shoot At Alleged Van Thief

A B.C. RCMP officer had to fire at a van thief suspect who was trying to flee police in Maple Ridge on Saturday night.

Police spotted a stolen van just before midnight and began following it in an unmarked car. Without warning, the suspect reversed the van into the police car, said RCMP in a news release on Sunday.

The suspect then abandoned the van in a dead end and stole a second vehicle, said police. As he was trying to flee, he crashed into a second police car.

A 31-year-old suspect from Surrey was taken into custody.

"What I can tell you is at no time were police involved in a pursuit. During the incident a police officer discharged his service pistol," said RCMP Supt. Dave Walsh. "The suspect was not injured due to the discharge of the police firearm, but did sustain minor injuries in the crashes."

The suspect was treated in hospital and remains in police custody.
