Five arrested in Vancouver's first homicide of 2013; police say attack targeted

VANCOUVER - Five men have been arrested after a 19-year-old man was swarmed and killed in an attack in East Vancouver.

Investigators say the victim, who did not have a criminal record but was known to police, was assaulted late Wednesday night by a group using a variety of weapons.

Const. Brian Montague says it was a targeted attack and there are suggestions there are ties to the drug trade, including some loose gang connections.

The five suspects were arrested after they arrived at hospital for treatment of various injuries, but three were later released.

No charges have been laid in the killing, which is Vancouver's first homicide of the year. (The Canadian Press,News1130)
