Common Thread: A Compendium Of The Week That Was In Style News

A Compendium Of The Week That Was In Style News
Elizabeth & James

In the wonderful world of fashion, everyone — and everything — is connected. We’re taking a look at who and what made waves in the past seven days, and weaving a common thread between them. From making fashion-forward bags to making fashion faux pas, this is your one-stop style-story shop.

1. Vittorio Missoni

Common Thread Week Of February 1

1. Vittorio Missoni. Another piece of the missing Missoni puzzle was found this week: a bag that was stowed on the missing plane that was carrying Missoni’s heir apparent, Vittorio Missoni, and five other passengers was found on the island of Curaçao. The bag belongs to a man who was taking a flight to the same destination as Missoni, and asked to put his luggage on that plane instead of his because there wasn’t enough room. The bag was empty when a German tourist discovered it on the Caribbean island.

Do you know where else bags are big news?

2. Elizabeth & James. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen aren’t sitting back on their laurels after their big CFDA win for their high-end line, The Row. Nope, they’re now turning their attention to designing a handbag collection for their “affordable” apparel line Elizabeth & James (named after their two siblings). The bags will be crafted out of Italian suede, leather and haircalf, and New Zealand lambskin.

Do you know what other handbag designer is forging his way into new territory?

3. Michael Kors. With millions of people struggling to feed themselves and their families everyday, Michael Kors has joined forces with the World Food Programme (and handful of notable celebrities) to campaign for the end of world hunger. He’s filmed a PSA outlining the plight of the disadvantaged and is asking for $5 donations. Having already donated $5 million to the NYC-based God’s Love We Deliver, it’s obvious this cause is very close to his heart.

Do you know which famous designer isn’t feeling quite as charitable?

4. Karl Lagerfeld. The svelte, white-haired creative head of Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld has expressed his dislike of First Lady Michelle Obama’s latest haircut. Mrs. Obama stepped out with a new fringed bob for her husband’s inauguration, and Karl was not impressed. He went on a French TV show and commented that the new fringe made Mrs. Obama look like a “news reader”, which in his mind is not a good thing…even though the interview he was giving was being conducted by, well, a news reader.

Do you who is getting some good press?

5. Vogue Thailand. The very first Southeast Asian Vogue was published this week — and it’s already sold out. Vogue Thailand is the 21st international edition of the magazine, and also holds the title for another Vogue first: the first male editor-in-chief. Kullawit Laosuksri commissioned famed milliner Phillip Treacy to create an interpretation of the traditional Thai headdress, a chada, for his first cover. The results are clearly stunning and resonated with the nation.

Do you what else was stunning and resonated with a nation?

6. SAG Awards Red Carpet. This is the awards show where actors vote for actors. It encourages camaraderie, friendly competition and a red carpet full of gorgeous gowns (and the actresses in them). So, even if you’re not a Hollywood actor (or ever will be), sit back, click through and enjoy all the pretty people wearing pretty dresses.
