Two bodies found in Bécancour house fire

Quebec provincial police have found two bodies in the rubble of a home destroyed by an overnight fire in Bécancour.

Flames broke out around midnight at 10195 Blvd. Bécancour, a house located near the shore of the St. Lawrence River.

Police said the 19th century home was built of wood and burned quickly and dramatically — emitting flames that could be seen from many kilometres away.

Sgt. Eloise Cossette said authorities were alerted to the fire when a woman living across the river in Trois Rivières spotted the flames and called 911.

Firefighters responded quickly but the home was destroyed.

Officials have been searching for two people since the fire was put out.

“At 9:30 this morning, officers located two bodies under debris in the burnt-out home,” said Cossette.

Cossette said they are likely the bodies of the man and the woman who lived in the home, but they still need to be identified by a coroner.

Police will continue to search through the debris to determine the cause of the fire.
