Aspiring students perform their Newsday auditions

Real students, real issues, real news — that's the promotional line for the CBC Newsday project, the day we turn over our airwaves to high school students.

It's the fifth year we've been reaching out to young people like this. Several of the teenaged reporters will also work with our partner the Vancouver Sun.

The 30 finalists receive a $1,000 scholarship from Sylvan Learning, once they complete the program.

Newsday itself is not until March 27, but this weekend, hundreds of students auditioned.

They all pitched stories that mattered to people their age.

Winners will be announced by Feb. 15.
