High-profile First Nations elder, father of slain Saskatchewan RCMP officer dies

PRINCE ALBERT, Sask. - A well-respected aboriginal elder in Saskatchewan has died in hospital of cancer.

Howard Cameron, a member of the Beardy's Okemasis First Nation near Duck Lake, was recognized as a ceremonial keeper in his community since 2000.

The former Mountie was also the father of RCMP officer Robin Cameron, who followed in his footsteps but was shot to death in the line of duty near Spiritwood, Sask., in 2006.

The elder Cameron was stationed in various communities during his policing career and played an active role in the province's child-welfare review.

In 2005, he received the Centennial Award of Merit from the province.

No funeral plans have been made.
